Social Media Validation: How Many Likes Does it Take for Me to Feel Loved?

Hello! It's been quite some time { 7 months! } since I've posted on the blog! All I can say is that it's been a whirlwind first year of college. Updates to come. I'm going to start a new weekly feature to my posts: Wednesday Enlightenment. It will be a thought on my mind for the week and some philosophy through my eyes. I hope that through these weekly posts, I can open your mind and cause you to think and maybe improve something in your life. Here is my first go at it:

If you are on your social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) or contemplating what to say for your next post on social media for more than 30 minutes a day, you should start to do some prioritizing. Watch the time when you embark on another swipe into updates of your friends' lives. It ticks by so fast that you realize two or three hours later that you have wasted so much time. I am not saying I've never done that because I can definitely be an internet junkie sometimes. But one of my biggest concerns for anyone living today, young and old, is that we are addicted and need another hit of "love" from Facebook or Instagram too often.

We compare ourselves to the seemingly perfect lives of those we follow, even though everyone fights a battle sometime in their life, though they might not display it publicly.

We need to feel validated by the amount of likes our pictures or clever statuses get.

Our lives begin to be shaped and gain excitement from a digital thumbs up.

IT IS TIME TO STOP LETTING OUR WORTH BE DETERMINED BY NUMBERS OF LIKES, FOLLOWERS, AND COMMENTS.

When you stop seeking attention and affirmation from other people, start giving it to yourself.

When you find contentment and love from yourself, the need to have the most followers or likes on social media dissolves.

Take it from someone who has been there before. Once I decided to barely post and start to love myself despite what others thought or how many likes I got, I realized my self-worth and gained solid confidence in myself.

Start loving yourself.
Stop posting just to get validation.
Start allowing yourself to put the smartphone down or put your computer to sleep and THINK:
  • What do I need to improve in myself?
  • How can I replace my negative thoughts with positive thoughts?
  • What do I take for granted?
  • What am I thankful for?
  • What other things could I use this time to do?
  • Who can I serve today?
  • Who needs to be reminded that I love them?
I'm not saying social media is of the devil. It surely isn't. I use it daily. But it can get out of hand. So, it's time to use it in moderation. Keep up with distant friends and family, maybe post a little something and then be off of it.

I challenge you to try it out and see. Start loving yourself. When you truly begin that process, your days will get brighter, you will feel more happiness surrounding you. And once you start giving that happiness away, it will find its way back to you.

the impromptu.

The best things in life are unplanned. I love getting to spend time with one of my awesome sisters-in-law, Catherine. She and my other sis-in-law, Sami, are the sisters I never had {I have three brothers}.

So Cath did my hair and makeup and we went out and tried out a few shots. I think she did an awesome job!

 I feel like I look different in all of my pictures. Like a different look. What do you think?

lacey sunday.

{dress-Steinmart, necklace-Charlotte Russe, bag-ShopRuche, wedges-Jean Michel Cazabat}

You see those spots on my legs? Those are my 30+ mosquito bites that I've received while traveling and having impromptu photo shoots in grassy areas. Beautiful.

So I started a juice feast {fast} 5 days ago. I've lost 5 pounds so far. I feel like you can definitely tell in these pictures. Just a few pounds can make you feel a lot more confident. I would recommend it! Nothing has tasted bad at all, it's really yummy and you do stay full! No starvation whatsoever!

I'm packing up for my last week in this beautiful place. The humidity is lightening up and it is just beautiful!

what can i say?

Disclaimer: This crazy jumpsuit looks much better in person.
{jumpsuit-Go Jane, sandals-H&M, bag-Patricia Nash, jewelry-Mexico, Forever 21, gifted}

"Kenz, is that a jumpsuit?! Are you a hippie!!!??" said my brother, Casey, as I picked him up from work.

I was at the grocery store buying exactly 51 apples along with a multitude of other produce and people were giving me crazy looks. Do I want attention? No. I just think it's comfy and I feel good in it.

I have a sense of humor and yes, I know this thing is crazy but I also love it. It reminds me of my really crazy days..just look through my archives and see what I thought actually looked good together!

dorm decor : flying from the nest

1. Bright and Early Bird Quilt Set from Modcloth $119.99
2. Round Pintuck Pillow from Urban Outfitters $34.00
3. Jersey Sheet Set from Target $17.99
4. Three Little Owls Figurine Set from ShopRuche $11.99
5. Pom-Pom-a-Thon from Cotton On $24.95
6. Ruffled Laundry Bag from Urbanoutfitters $29.00

As school is nearing {some sooner than others}, I wanted to show a little spirit of decorating for your college dorm. I picked this quilt because it was one of my favorites and it is symbolic of leaving home and flying free, which I am definitely looking forward to.

I didn't go into extensive detail but here is just a cute idea for a girly dorm. I decided that I wanted mine a little more bohemian with pops of color. You'll see my dorm once I move in late August.

just another manic monday.

 {top-Kohl's, skirt-Goodwill, wedges-Charlotte Russe, bag-Patricia Nash, jewelry-Target, Francesca's, F21}
I tend to always cut off my head in pictures because I don't like the way my face looks. Once a month, I will actually like a picture with my face. I don't like the top picture face here, but I knew I had to at least one of my face or it would be off-balanced. It's funny since I model, you think I'd have it down, but modeling is like acting for me. You become something else, not yourself. When it's just me, McKenzie, in front of the camera I just look dumb. Weird, huh?

I love this beautiful Patricia Nash tote. I found it in New York and loved how unique it was. While I was in Gatlingburg/Knoxville, Tennessee, I was able to stop by Ms. Nash's showroom and meet her! It was a delightful experience! She and her staff were so kind! As I browsed around, there was not a single thing I disliked. Here is something else  and this too that I'm loving by her. I don't think I'll ever look at another brand of handbags again.

I'm trying to cope with the fact that I'm leaving home in about 2 weeks to drive out to Utah..to stay! I'm nervous and so excited! Trying a new thing called exercise..wish I had a buddy to motivate me more. So far so good. I live next to a park so I run on over and do a few miles.

come away with me.

{top-Anthropologie, skirt-H&M, shoes-Max Studio, jewelry-Forever 21, gifts from unknown places}

My style is a mix of bohemian and classic/elegant. I'm a sucker for anything maxis. A recent count showed that I have about 16 maxi skirts and dresses. I would wear them over pants any day. I wore this to church Sunday.

It's funny how you forget all of the stuff you have in your closet and then you go through stuff and you're like, "oh yeah!!" That happens to me a lot. :)

I hope you're having a blissful summer and making all of your goals happen! I'm definitely trying. I have a lot of goals. One of them being traveling. I can check that off because my sweet aunt invited me to come along with her to New York for the Fourth of July! AH! I went two years ago and I knew it was time I went back. Can't wait!

What are your plans for the Fourth?
